Our Philosophy

Building and Construction trades opportunities are expansive and everyone should have access  to them.  Everyone has value. Likewise, they possess skill sets. When combined with their world-view - channeled through a career lens - the ingredients for a community and society to thrive is maximized.  Our approach to this work is primarily based on an embrace of our cultural memory bank and collective proclivity towards breaking the chains of poverty and lifting ourselves, our families and our community to higher heights of achievement -- in all that we do.

The Multi-craft Apprenticeship Preparation Program, Inc. (M.A.P.P.) offers qualified, interested and capable candidates an opportunity to gain the necessary knowledges that will enable them to successfully navigate a NYS registered Building and Construction trades apprenticeship program and earn a livable wage.  From working with Sheet Metal, to Elevator Constructors, from Plumbers and Pipe-Fitters to Electricians and Iron-Workers, Painters, Laborers, Masons, Glaziers, Insulators and a host of other career-track  options, the construction trades are as diverse as can be imagined.  The M.A.P.P. provides participants with the opportunity to experience a variety of Labor Union construction trade crafts -- 'up close' -- prior to even pursuing a  career-track specialty.  Given the historical, and ongoing, disadvantages experienced by African Americans in general, the focus of our work is amongst this particular population.  We aim to expand and diversify the Labor Union candidate pool throughout the Greater Rochester, NY construction trades industry, while simultaneously empowering -- through informing --   potential candidates in their apprenticeship aspirations.

Multi-Craft Core

Curriculum

M.A.P.P. employs an innovative training curriculum which providing participants with common skills, knowledges, competencies and certifications needed to enter any of the building trade apprenticeship.

We have come to be recognized as one of Rochester's Premier ladders 'Straight Outta Poverty.'

  • #1 - ENTRY INTO THE M.A.P.P. PROGRAM

    Successful initial interviewees are placed into the program.  Like most apprenticeships, this process may include a general knowledge assessment and DRUG TEST.  Our program is designed to prepare adults (18-40) who have:

          * H.S. Diploma / G.E.D. / H.S.E.

          * Drivers License

          * Access to Reliable Transportation

          * Ability to PASS A DRUG SCREEN

  • #2 - FUNDAMENTALS OF THE PROGRAM

    M. A. P. P. fuses instruction common to each of the building trades' apprenticeship programs.

    The modules include:

    • A general orientation about construction apprenticeships

    • Construction industry overview

    • Hands-On exposure to various hand and power tools and materials

    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification

    • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 Certification

    • Mathematics for construction and associated applications; and

    • General Construction Labor History, particularly as it relates to the historical

       experience(s) and contributions of the African American within that story

  • #3 - ENTRY INTO UNION TRADE APPRENTICESHIPS

    Upon successful completion of the M.A.P.P., graduates will be prepared to interview with -- and sit for an entrance exam (as required) -- their chosen craft/trade. Upon acceptance into a NYS Registered Construction Trades Apprenticeship program, they will be well on their way towards a successful career -- without worrying about accumulating suffocating student debt!  Apprenticeships, including our pre-apprenticeship program, represent true 'Earn-As-You-Learn' career-tracks towards a middle-class life!

Project Phoenix

Project Phoenix is the "sister program" of the M.A.P.P.   The directors created and implemented this 'On-The-Job' training component to identify participant strengths in real-time.  The work of escaping the clutches of systemic poverty requires not only real-time 'focus' but real-time 'ACTION' as well.   Project Phoenix  sets the foundation for construction skills enhancement.  Successful program participants are identified and 'promoted' into the M.A.P.P. based on identified aptitude and encouraged to proactively position themselves to earn Direct Entry into the trade-craft they have expressed in or shown a natural affinity to.

  • #1 - WHY PROJECT PHOENIX

    Communities are built, strengthened and sustained through shared values, vision and effort. We leverage our 'accountability to community,'  knowledge of construction industry trends and the broader experience of our leadership team, to help drive positive change as it relates to stimulating critically needed job creation, specifically in the arena of the Building and Construction trades -- an industry sector currently experiencing tremendous workforce expansion.

    Project Phoenix represents a viable pipeline from which the M.A.P.P. opportunity can become a reality for more individuals in and of the community. Many look to 'try-on' a career as a crafts person in the Building and Construction trades and Project Phoenix provides the platform upon which critically needed economic uplift is made accessible.

  • #2 - HOW DOES PROJECT PHOENIX WORK

    We understand the many inhibitors contributing to the overall lack of awareness of the true benefits of a rewarding career in the Building and Construction trades - particularly amongst historically disadvantaged populations. This is where Project Phoenix rises and shines.  Project Phoenix provides participants with an On-The-Job training experience affording participants an opportunity to explore the many facets of the the industry itself.

    We are there every step of the way, guiding and encouraging participants as they  consider whether or not a career in the trades is for them.

  • #3 - FROM PROJECT PHOENIX TO M.A.P.P.

    Project Phoenix provides a unique opportunity for both prospective M.A.P.P. participants, who have a true interest for a career in the Building and Construction trades, to 'Show Up, On-Time, EVERY DAY and Show Out!'  and for program staff to identify the necessary character traits considered fundamental to the trades.

    Upon satisfactorily performing work on Project Phoenix job-sites, participants can look forward to being invited to transition directly into the M.A.P.P.  Of course, successful completion of the M.A.P.P., earns graduates an opportunity for an apprenticeship seat in their chosen trade craft.
